The Water’s Edge is a private 712-acre quiet community hosting a PGA golf course hailed as one of the top in the mid-Atlantic. The course is known for a variety of unique obstacles, from its signature island green to nine holes playing across and along the shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake. The course offers bentgrass tees, fairways and greens and hand-raked sand bunkers. The 18-hole, PGA championship Golf course was designed by the late R.F. Loving, Jr., ASGC, a nationally renowned golf course architect. In 2007, the golf course was renovated by famed golf course architect Richard Mandell and Aspen Corporation.

The Clubhouse
The expansive 36,000-square foot clubhouse is designed to match the local architecture of Appalachian barns, built of post and beam construction and covered with a copper roof. The clubhouse includes exquisite dining and bar areas, banquet facilities, and men’s and women’s lounges including fitness center.

Equestrian Center
Also included is a 36-acre fully equipped equestrian center with trails assigned throughout the site. With a total of 75 acres of riding area, The Water’s Edge Equestrian center offers trails winding through woods with scenic lake views.

The Chapel
A small restored historic chapel has become one of the most popular venues used for unique weddings at Smith Mountain Lake. The intimate 48-seat chapel, which also allows for up to 300 seated guests outside, was originally built in the 1890s. The chapel was discovered during the course construction in 1986. Since it was a house of worship, The Willard companies, developers of the project, chose to build the course around it. The chapel can be seen from the 6th, 7th and 8th fairways.

Additional amenities include clay and hard-tru tennis courts, Jr. Olympic size pool, state-of-the-art practice facility, driving range, putting, chipping and training facility, including Pro shop stocked with attire and merchandise. The club is supported by the established residential neighborhoods surrounding the properties, golf course and lakefront, which account for 450 existing memberships with potential to grow to 600.
